Stems weak, taproot stout, sap white milky, flowers yellow, achenes terete. What is this? Like a big dense-inflorescenced super hairy Crepis? (CJR Apr/09).

Description
Uncommon (twenty plants) in weedy lawn, in partial shade of deciduous woodlot, with Carex spp., Viola, Veronica hederifolia, Taraxacum, Ranunculus, Lamium purpureum, grasses, Luzula, etc. This species is fairly common and widespread locally (common on Duke campus, for example).

Plants had been mowed, hence the cut-off central stems and chopped leaves…
