Record Comments
Possibly E. X ferrissii Clute; or, less likely, E. laevigatum A. Braun. The spores, although young, seem to 1) lack chlorophyll; 2) be STRONGLY misshapen and irregular; and 3) have very irregular or sometimes non-existent elators. There is a hint of a double dark band around the sheaths, suggesting that this has some influence from Eq. hyemale (a putative parent of X ferrissii, along with E. laevigatum). The cones show a slight apiculum at the tip, not as strong as E. hyemale, but stronger than most specimens of Eq. laevigatum. I lean toward hybridity for this specimen. Another factor indicating an influence from Eq. hyemale is the fact that the sheeth teeth show a strong articulation line. - ARS, 31 Jan 2001
