Uncommon, on slight knolls (i.e., thinner duff), in medium shade, along trailside through hardwood forest. With Quercus seedlings, Polystichum, Asplenium platyneuron, Vitis rotundifolia, Viburnum acerifolium, etc. In Acer/Quercus/Liquidambar hardwood forest.
