Description
Common, but almost all sterile (two flowers seen in 1/2 hour of searching, and both had been munched on by something). In deciduous floodplain forest, with Acer rubrum, Carya, Liquidambar, Quercus, Vitis, Vaccinium, Viburnum, Parthenocissus, etc. Understory was sparse, but almost all shrubby, whereas on the other side of the road (H.arifolia--Rothfels et al. 2809--but no H.lewisii) the understory was also sparse, but almost all herbs.
Collection notes
Plants mostly visible as single leaves, rhizomatous. Leaves marked with white areas around the veins, dark areas between them. Flower cut open prior to pressing.
